Stunning location en route. Only half mile from Greenhead where evening meal available and downhill from Roman Army museum. Rooms were spacious, clean. Hosts were incredible. Provided newspaper for wet boots and aiders to dry out clothes. Also accepted luggage transfer bags. Would definitely recommend and hope to stay again when next in area

The owners are very friendly and do all they can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The house is very cosy and well-equipped. The location is perfect when you want to visit the Lake District and the Hadrian Wall. The walk path (Hadrian Wall) is directly behind the house. If you enjoy rest and quietness, this is the perfect place to stay.

Myself and my adult daughter stayed overnight as part of our three day hike on the Hadrians Wall Trail. Our hosts were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. They provided a lovely vegan breakfast and packed lunch which met dietary preference but was not really expected. The Pub was a pleasant 10 minute walk and this also had a vegan menu! Absolutely perfect. Thank you for the genuine hospitality.

Stayed in the Cottage for our holiday. Absolutely lovely cottage and in a great location for all the Hadrians Wall sites (that and your actually staying on the wall!! Can't get much better than that!!). Judy and Alan are fantastic owners always checking that we were okay, we had an 8 month old with us and they had the travel cot ready for us and lots of spare blankets for him, really lovely people. Very nice accommodations, dinner at the suggested Greenhead pub was excellent, and the window view of Thirlwall Castle ruins for our breakfast was a most fitting way to end our holiday. We will certainly book there again and are recommending it to friends.Follow the host's driving instructions they e-mail you, not Google or Apple map apps.Otherwise be prepared to feel foolish when the road ends below the castle and you see the back side of the guesthouse from the wrong side of the river.

Overnight stay at Holmhead, June 2015 - Rating 4/5
I stayed in Room 2 which is a double and is well appointed and spotlessly clean as is everywhere.I appreciated being offered a jug of fresh milk and a homemade muffin on arrival after a day's walk, and later on I enjoyed sitting in the very comfortable lounge and browsing a good selection of books and magazines.Next morning, breakfast was served in the same room, with an excellent choice, and to a high standard. However, there are two comments I would make for the benefit of others thinking of booking at Holmhead.I don't know about the other guest rooms but the ensuite with Room 2 had what I call a Mediterranean shower arrangement ie a shower head with a 3/4 length shower curtain, not a shower cubicle.Water therefore went all over the floor of the ensuite, supposedly draining away. This didn't work fully as English temperatures are not Mediterranean ones (!) and so the floor remained wet then still damp for many hours.I managed ok, being on my own but I am not sure how a couple would have found this - my guess is that it would not have been easy to manage. The other comment I would make relates to the fact that there is a bunkhouse beneath the guest rooms.Room 2 appeared to be directly over the kitchen/living area of the bunk house. The occupants of the bunkhouse went on talking well into the night. While they were not making excessive noise, just generally chatting and laughing, the sound carried right up into Room 2 and rendered sleep impossible. This may only affect that particular room - I don't know.In all other respects, as I have indicated, I had a very enjoyable stay at an excellent and friendly b&b.Leaving aside the noise filtering up from the bunkhouse, which it is not fair to factor in, but taking into account the "quirky" shower arrangements, I am rating Holmhead with four stars, as below.

The Week to the Wall! - Rating 5/5
The whole area of Hadrian's Wall is fabulous, and offers so much to do.Holmhead Guest House was the icing on the cake. The situation is idyllic, at the end of a lush and quiet valley with a castle as a backdrop. The Wall Walk goes right past the garden gate, allowing you to explore the Wall in two directions without getting in the car.It is a great overnight location if you are walking the Wall.We stayed in the cottage, which was cosy and well appointed, with everything you need.It has its own section of garden allowing you to sit out in seclusion, if you want.We received a warm welcome, including muffins! And for a pad literally on Hadrian's Wall the price was reasonable.

Ideally sited on the Pennine Way and Hadrian's Wall with just a 10 minute walk to the village pub for evening meals and good beer. The rooms are comfortable, a good freshly cooked breakfast is provided and there was also fruit, yoghurts and quality preserves available. There is a separate sitting room for guests and the guest areas are effectively separate from the private residential part of the property so. This was my second visit, this time with my wife who also enjoyed Holmhead. Owners very friendly but not intrusive - just got the balance right. Ideal base for walking in Northumberland & Cumbria.

When the world is crazy and you need peace of mind - head for Holmhead, it's so peaceful (apart from a rare passing freight train) You will be made so welcome by Judy and Alan - you will sleep soundly and wake to the most wonderful fresh fruit salad and full English breakfast. This is my 3rd visit and I can't wait to go back again! I have visited with my husband and son before, but this time I traveled alone, but never felt lonely. There is lots to do in the area come rain or shine and a gentle evening stroll to the local Pub at Greenhead is the perfect way to wind down.Thank you again for another wonderful stay.

Holmhead - Rating 4/5
I stayed at Holmhead 23/05/2014 and it has to be said it is one of the better places to stay especially as it is situated on the route of Hadrians Wall. The welcome is as good as the food, and is a place I would stop again.

Amazeballs! - Rating 5/5
Arrived here after a tiring week mountaineering in Scotland and was treated to a very well presented bedroom, comfy bed, hot shower and a great night's sleep.Owners were super friendly and provided us with a very nice breakfast, their local knowledge and willingness to impart advice meant we could go on to make the best use of our day walking the Roman wall. All in all a superb B&B and one we would most definitely recommend!

Could not of picked a better place to stay for our first Hadrian's Wall trip. What a great location, the wall trail right on the door step, fantastic hosts and breakfast and great accommodation. I would not hesitate to recommend anyone visiting the area to book here.

Right on! For the Wall - Rating 4/5
Walking the wall and at any time a great place to stay. Brilliantly friendly and warm and cosy. Only a hop skip and jump (or hobble in our case) to the pub. We'd come back anytime!

While we were only there for one night and got there rather late, the place is lovely, and very comfortable.Be sure to follow the directions to arrive safely, but once there, the rooms are spacious and you'll get a great night's sleep.Breakfast is fantastic and they are close to many fun things to see at Hadrian's Wall.

Highest recommendation! - Rating 5/5
Just a lovely experience. In our two nights stay at Holmhead, Judy and Alan made us feel like family, and it was difficult to leave. Crossing the small bridge and driving down the quiet lane past sheep has the effect of calming nerves after hours spent on the motorway, and then to enter their beautiful home is further tonic. Clean, quiet, with well-stocked bookshelves, the temptation is to pull up a chair, but gorgeous scenery is just outside the door. Definitely one of the most enjoyable stops of our trip.

An Excellent B&B - Rating 5/5
The location is prefect, the hosts are perfect, the breakfasts are delicious, the setting is quiet and restful and the cost is very competetive.Located literally on Hadrian's Wall, it is the perfect loaction to visit the wall especially if you are on a tight budget.Holmhead is also with walking distance of a lovely tea shop and an oustanding pub and restaurant at Greenhead Hotel. Judy and Alan go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.Judy, in fact, kindly offered to wash some of our laundry for us.We hope that we have the opportunity to stay with them, again, soon.

Beautiful place with wonderful owners - Rating 5/5
Judy and Alan Clark have a gorgeous guest house that is hidden off the main road. It is right on Hadrian’s Wall and in front of Thirlwall Castle. The room was wonderful and the bed comfortable. Judy and Alan made a delicious English breakfast for me the next morning. In addition to the wonderful boarding and food, Judy and Alan helped me to make plans for travelling down Hadrian’s Wall to make sure I saw as much as possible in the little time I had. They also assisted me in making sure I had directions to my next lodging in Nottingham. They were extremely kind and so helpful!

Wonderful place to stay - Rating 5/5
We stayed at Holmhead Guesthouse for two nights in May while exploring the Hadrian's wall area. Judy and Alan go out of there way to make you comfortable. Room was clean and bright and breakfast was excellent. It was a very convenient place to use as a base for visiting the Hadrian Wall sites. Exploring the ruins of Thurlwall Castle located a very short walk away was a real bonus. We would not hesitate to recommend this B&B to others.

Judy & Alan made us very welcome in their home at Holmhead and went the extra mile to make our stay a very pleasant experience. We was walking The Hadrian's Wall Walk and Holmhead is right on the Wall itself. It was my second visit and I will return again. The location is great and The Greenhead Hotel and the Tea Rooms opposite for food made for a very pleasant stay. Thank You Liz especially for the Choc Ice. Shaun
